Iridescent Gem! In response to gold discoveries in Georgia and California, the U.S. issued two new denominations of gold coins in 1849, the gold dollar and the twenty dollar gold piece. For the very first dollar issue, 1000 coins were issued without the designer’s initial “L” on the coin. Besides being the first gold dollar issue, this is also one of the rarest. In gold expert David Akers’ book he states, “from the standpoint of mintage and number of specimens offered at auction, this is the third rarest gold dollar.” This Gem has super clean, mark-free surfaces. And the strike is 100% full. The color is deep “orange peel” with incredible iridescent glow
