1862 $1 Legal Tender with rare low erotic/exotic serial number 200! Displaying signatures of Chittenden and Spinner, Fr 16, plate number D51 and series 257. Graded 58 Choice About New by PCGS. Bright colors and deep embossing are immediately apparent on this lovely example of our Nation's first $1 Bill. The Head of Salmon P. Chase, Secretary of the Treasury under Abraham Lincoln, 1861-1864, and Chief Justice of the U.S Supreme Court, 1864-1873. He best known to numismatist for his causing the motto "In God We Trust" to be adopted for our national coinage. Chase articulated the "slave power conspiracy" thesis well before Lincoln did, and he coined the slogan "Free Soil, Free Labor, Free Men." He devoted his enormous energies to the destruction of what he considered the Slave Power, the conspiracy of slave owners to seize control of the federal government and block the progress of liberty. A United States Note is a fiat paper currency that was issued directly into circulation by the United States Department of the Treasury. The notes were also known as Legal Tender Notes because of the inscription on its face stating "This Note is a Legal Tender." They were among the first national United States currency, authorized by the Legal Tender Act of 1862 and began circulating during the American Civil War. They preceded the National Bank Notes and Gold Certificates of 1865. On a United States Note, the Treasury seal and the notes serial number are printed in red.
