In 1973, the Topps baseball card set dropped from 787 cards in the previous year to just 660. This included 24 blue team checklists. This also marked the final year that Topps would release their cards in series throughout the year. This meant the end of the scarcer "high number" cards.

The most sought after cards from this year are Babe Ruth, Willie Mays and Hank Aaron (1), Hank Aaron on his own (100), Nolan Ryan (220) and Willie Mays as a Met (304), his last active card. There is also Roberto Clemente's final card (50). Key rookie cards include Bob Boone (613), Dwight Evans (614) and Mike Schmidt (615). In addition to having action shots on the front surrounded by white borders, the cards feature a small silhouette of the player with their name, team and position. On the backs of the cards, the information is shown vertically – the first time that was done since 1968. There is a brief biography, statistics and a cartoon included.
