This was the first year that Topps, the undisputed leader of the sports card industry at the time, began to issue their cards in complete sets. This was done so they wouldn't have to compete with their own football card releases.

The 1974 Topps baseball card set was released all at once, as a 660-card factory set. Subsets included Hank Aaron career cards, League Leaders, All-Star Selections, Playoff Highlights, World Series Highlights and Rookie Stars. Of the rookie cards, the most valued are Dave Parker, Ken Griffey Sr. and Dave Winfield. Other highly sought after cards include Hank Aaron (2) and Frank Robinson (55). The belief prior to the season that the San Diego Padres would relocate to Washington created a set variation. Initial production runs featured Padres team members as playing for the National League, in Washington. Since that never happened, Topps had to quickly revise the cards for future production.
