Coined to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the incorporation of Cleveland as a city; as well as the Great Lakes Exposition of 1936-37. The obverse depicts Moses Cleaveland who founded the city in 1796; while the reverse utilized the official insignia of the Exposition. The Expo covered over 135 acres of Cleveland's lakefront and featured numerous attractions: rides; sideshows; botanical gardens; cafes; art galleries; and much more. Similar to the Chicago World Fair; the Exposition wanted to expose visitors to other countries' cultures; celebrate American industry; and promote local businesses. Although the Great Lakes Exposition was not as much of a world fair as the Chicago World Fair was; the exposition drew 4 million visitors in its first season; and 7 million by the end of its second and final season in September 1937.The present example is one of only 2 MS68s graded by PCGS; with no coins graded higher. Neither of these coins has ever traded in auction. Both obverse and reverse boast an exquisite sunset orange glow; with gorgeous rose; crimson; emerald and violet highlights. CAC certified.
