BRANCH MINT PROOF. Unique as Certified. Likely struck in July of 1891 as a celebratory end to the Seated Liberty series. Enchanting! See the original NGC article here: In July of 1891 in the sweltering coining room of the New Orleans Mint came one of the greatest rarities ever born of a branch mint facility. We have not ever seen or heard of the existence of another 1891-O Dime in Proof format, and its mere existence isn’t well known even amongst the most well-educated numismatists. Some of the value in American numismatics is just how much marketing has contributing to certain coins and what they’re worth over the years. Don’t get me wrong, this is part of the allure of certain pieces such as the 1894-S Dime, the 1804 Dollar, the 1913 Nickel and so-forth, but for the contrarian there are many opportunities in today’s marketplace that are entirely untapped. You just need to know where to look, and with an understanding that since they aren’t backed by 100 years of marketing they can be had at a fraction of the price. The allure of proof branch mint coinage has existed for generations. These mints were notorious for poor record keeping and there would have been no reason to acknowledge on paper the existence of a special striking or Proof. This is one of the finest opportunities awarded to the collector ready to pounce. Coins this rare won’t go unnoticed for long, and indeed their presence in any collection is a major prize.
