SPECIMEN STRIKE. One of 5 Known. An incredible opportunity to acquire this Civil War Date Ultra Rarity! It’s late February, 1861. Just one month prior the State of Louisiana seceded from the Union but had not yet plead allegiance to the Confederacy. It was a short interim period in which a phenomenal New Orleans Mint rarity transpired. See, at the same time that Confederate Officials were meeting in Alabama to create their own Constitution, the New Orleans Mint is believed to have held a “hand-off” ceremony of the Mint facility from the State of Louisiana to the Confederacy. Five Proof/Specimen Strikes of the 1861-O Half Dollar were produced and given to New Orleans Mint Officials that were present. Those individuals were Mint Superintendent A. Elmore, Mint Treasurer A.J. Guirot, Mint Assayer Howard Millspaugh, Chief Coiner Dr. B.F. Taylor and Mint Melter and Refiner M.F. Monzano. The present example is beautiful sea-green toned and brilliant throughout. Four solidly confirmed Specimen Strikes and a single full-blown Proof (we also own) have been found through the years and reside in NGC holders. PCGS has never certified any, mainly because they don’t understand the back-story and won’t do their own research on these magnificent issues. There is a single Specimen Strike 1861-O $20 out there known. It makes perfect sense why and how these would have been produced, and each in comparison with an 1838-O Proof Half Dollar is a phenomenal relative value for what the date represents and the fact it is significantly rarer. Collections come and collections go, but legends last forever. A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity unlikely to be replicated any time soon. Pop 1/2
