5C 1866 RAYS. PCGS MS66 CAC. The first five cent nickel issue was struck in 1866. The design included a spray of rays between the stars surrounding the large 5 in the center. The metal proved hard to work with, and the complexity of the design, the reverse dies shattered quickly, and in 1867 the rays were removed. This is a lustrous and totally original GEM. A subtle golden blush with some icy blue hues attest to the originality of this PQ beauty. Sharply struck from shattered dies, this one is virtually without flaw and has an outstanding visual allure. PCGS 54, NGC 22, CAC 11. The last PCGS/CAC coin sold for $3,643 for September 2019; earlier that month an example sold for $5,760--the average APR for a PCGS MS66 CAC is $6,129. The CAC CPG value is $3,750 and there are only 8 in MS66+ graded higher. What a great coin for the greatest of sets. We know bidding will be strong as collectors look to add this first year of the nickel series to their sets! Cert. Number 37346650 PCGS # 3790.00
