POPULAR PCGS MS62 1849-D GOLD DOLLAR Variety 1-B. By a large margin, the popular first-year-of-issue 1849-D is the most available gold dollar from Dahlonega. There as many as 60-70+ known in Uncirculated with around 85% of these grading MS60 to MS62. In MS63, this date is very scarce and it is very rare in MS65 or finer. This piece is well-struck for the issue despite a number of mint-made die cracks seen on the reverse. It is bright and lustrous with light yellow-gold color and a touch of deeper orange-gold at the central reverse. The marks are as expected for the grade and the eye appeal is better than average. Since the end of 2018, just two 1849-D gold dollars graded MS62 by PCGS have been sold at auction: this coin (see below), and a CAC-approved piece which brought $7,931 as Legend 11/2018: 287. If you can even locate one, a PCGS MS63 example of this date is at least double the price of this MS62, making this a good value for most collectors. Ex Kagin’s 3/2021: 2154 where it sold for $6,600.
