Durrani. Taimur Shah (as Sultan) gold Mohur AH 1196 (1781/1782) (?), Herat mint, KM385 (1190), A-3090 (R), cf. Whitehead-387-389 (different dates). A somewhat scarce style whose dating is not widely agreed upon. Due to the positioning of the date around 12 o'clock on the obverse, right at the edge of the flan, the year is frequently excluded, in whole or in part. The Standard Catalog, which illustrates a specimen with a similar amount of the date showing, suggests 1190 (assuming it was written in retrograde); that same coin was offered by CNG in May 2002 (Auction 60, Lot 2111), where it was ascribed to 1196. The digit following the 9, however, does show evidence of a backward-facing upper stroke, suggesting a 6. A fascinating specimen in either case, and likely only a one-year type. This lot has been submitted to NGC for certification. Its grade will be updated on the online lot page as soon as it is available. From the Leo's College Fund Collection HID07901242017
