The first Gold Dollars debuted in 1849, the result of a large influx of gold from California. The first versions were the Open Wreath variety. This PCGS graded MS63 Gold Dollar is the Closed Wreath variety, plus it is also an L variety as well. The designer put his initials in the truncation of the bust or he did not. This one does have the L. There have been 3 different L-type varieties found. The mintage of the closed wreath variety is not known. This is a beautiful rare gold dollar. Pricing Guide = $5,000 Mintage = 687,567 Pop = 65
