He was the son of Louis II the German and Hemma, and a great-grandson of Charlemagne. He was the last Carolingian emperor of legitimate birth and the last to rule a united kingdom of the Franks. Charles was King of the East Frankish Empire 876-887, King of Italy 879-887, King of the West Frankish Empire 884-887. Obverse: + GRACIA D-I REX, KAROLVS monogram in beaded border.
