The Mercury Dime, or Winged Liberty Head Dime, designed by Adolph A. Weinman, was minted from 1916 to 1945. The 1941-D, struck at the Denver Mint, had a mintage of 45,634,000. Made of 90% silver and 10% copper (2.5g, 0.07234 oz silver), it bears a "D" mint mark on the reverse, near "ONE." Minted as the U.S. neared World War II, it was among the last Mercury Dimes before the Roosevelt Dime debuted in 1946. While common in lower grades, MS-68 FB 1941-D dimes are scarce. NGC reports only a handful—fewer than a dozen—in this grade, with none higher. Value reflects this rarity: a 2021 auction saw one sell for $1,320, though estimates now range from $1,500–$2,000+, depending on eye appeal (e.g., toning). An MS-68 (non-FB) hit $9,000 in 2023, likely an outlier.A 1941-D MS-68 FB is a numismatic gem—historically tied to the wartime era and technically superb. Though not a rare date like 1916-D, its condition makes it a standout for collectors chasing high-grade sets or registry points. It’s a treasure of craftsmanship and history.
