The 1940 Philadelphia Mercury Dime, designed by Adolph A. Weinman (1916–1945), had 11,827 proof coins minted. Graded PR-68 by NGC, this untoned, brilliant white specimen boasts mirror-like fields and sharp details—Liberty in a winged cap on the obverse, fasces and olive branch on the reverse (no mint mark). Composed of 90% silver, 10% copper (2.5g), it’s near-perfect, with only tiny imperfections under magnification.Proof-68 is a top grade for 1940 proofs, with few surpassing it (e.g., PR-69). Untoned examples are scarcer, as many develop patina over time. Its radiant surfaces enhance its eye appeal, prized by collectors. Values in 2018–2019 typically ranged from $1,500–$3,000, with this coin’s brilliance likely fetching a premium. This gorgeous coin blends minting artistry with a unique sales history, making it a numismatic gem.
