Designed by the Irish-born American sculptor Augustus Saint Gaudens, The Indian Head eagle 10-dollar gold coin was issued by the U.S. Mint from 1907 through 1969. It was also produced in subsequent years, though irregularly. From 1907 to 1908, the coin was issued without the motto "In God We Trust," until public outrage and a congressional bill mandated that it be put back in, which it was. The artistic design featured a Native American wearing a headdress and a standing bald eagle on the reverse. The early "No Motto" version has several variations.

There are 500 pieces of the 1907 Philadelphia Mint issue with a wire edge that have periods before and after "E PLURIBUS UNUM." Just 42 pieces exist with a rounded edge and the periods. A large number of 1908 Philadelphia and Denver issues are missing the motto, just before it was added back on. Of the later version with the motto, the smallest mintage is from the Denver Mint in 1911, with 30,100. The largest mintage was 2,356,640, in Denver in 1910. Although there were 312,500 Indian Head 10-dollar gold coins minted in 1933, many were melted down by the government in the late 1930s and never circulated. For this reason, this year's issue is a rarity.
