The Mercury dime, minted from 1916 to 1945, is also known as the Winged Liberty dime. The young Lady Liberty's winged cap caused her to be confused with the Roman god Mercury, leading to the more common name. It is made from 90 percent silver and 10 percent copper. The reverse of the mercury dimes features Roman fasces, symbolizing power and jurisdiction, along with an olive branch, signifying peace.

The key date for a collectable mercury dime is the 1916-D, struck at the Denver mint, due to its low minting of 264,000. The 1917-D is also rare. As for special varieties, there was a doubled die error of 1942/41, known as an overdate. There was also the 1942/41-D, though it is more difficult to discern. The 1945-S "Micro S," with its smaller mintmark, is also popular. Another interesting collectible is the counterfeit mercury dime. The Denver mint did not strike any dimes in 1923 or 1930, yet 1923-D and 1930-D specimens have been seen. These coins are believed to have originated in the Soviet Union during World War II.
