The U.S. Assay Office was located in San Francisco and was the forerunner of what would become the San Francisco Mint. They struck $10, $20 and $50 gold coins. This beautiful 'Twenty' is a bright, sharply struck example boldly displaying the ???900 THOUS.??? fineness designation. The eagle side shows strong definition and frosty luster across the wings and shield, while the reverse???s intricate engine-turning pattern remains crisp and fully intact. In PCGS MS63, this piece offers outstanding preservation for an early San Francisco gold issue???an impressive Mint State survivor from the heart of the Gold Rush era.
