(1544)M A Charles & Joanna 4 Reales. Calico-131. Really stunning state-of-preservation! In 1544, the silver 4 reales coin from Mexico, part of the Kingdom of New Spain during the Spanish Colonial Era, was a cob coin minted in Mexico City, the site of the first mint in the Americas established in 1535 under Charles I of Spain. These hand-struck coins, not milled, were crudely made by slicing metal bars into irregular blanks, weighing them, and hammering them with dies, resulting in uneven, often asymmetrical shapes with partial designs like the Habsburg shield or cross, mintmarks ("M" or "oM" for Mexico City), and assayer marks (e.g., "A" for Alonso de Villaseca). Unlike later milled coins introduced in the 1730s, these early cobs had inconsistent edges and weights, around 13.5 grams for a 4 reales, but were widely used in global trade, reflecting the primitive minting techniques of the early colonial period.
