John II Casimir. 1 Ort (aka 18 groszy)The obverse features the bust of the king facing right, in a crown and armor covered with a cloak, rim legend: IO CAS D G - REX P & SThe reverse features a five-field Polish-Lithuanian coat of arms under the crown. On the sides of the shield, the face value. At the bottom, the Wieniawa coat of arms and the initials TLB (Tytus Liwiusz Boratini), rim legend: MON ARGEN - REG POLAt the beginning of John Casimir's reign, an ambitious attempt at monetary reform took place (1650). A ban on the circulation of foreign money was introduced and the issuance of good own money began. An important episode in the history of Polish coinage was the opening of a provisional crown mint in Lviv (1656-1657). The monetary relations of the Republic of Poland were tried to be regulated by the ordinance of 1658. The most significant issues of sub-valued money during the reign of John Casimir were the issuance of small copper Crown and Lithuanian szelag (so-called boratynki) minted in the number of about 2 billion pieces and zloty (so-called tymfs), with an official value of 30 groszy – more than twice as high as the actual silver content in the coin. Among the city mints in the period discussed, there were mints in Gdansk, Elblag and Torun. John Casimir also used his minting rights as the Duke of Opole and Racibórz (three-kreut coins were minted in the Opole mint).
