COLOMBIA, Bogotá, gold cob 2 escudos, Charles II posthumous, no assayer (Arce) NGC MS-65 (1715 Fleet Shipwreck Label). Small flan with sharply detailed and nearly full cross and shield (no peripheries), lustrous all over (choice grade). The 1694–1701 Colombia Gold 2 Escudos of King Carlos II is a superb survivor of Spain’s late Habsburg gold coinage in the New World. Struck as a hand-cut cob, this piece reflects the artisanal minting methods of colonial Colombia. The bold devices of the type are especially well preserved on this example. NGC has graded 2 as MS65 with NONE FINER!Importantly, this is a shipwreck coin recovered from the famous 1715 Fleet; the Spanish treasure convoy lost in a hurricane off the Florida coast. Its recovery ties the coin to one of the most storied maritime disasters of the colonial era, transforming it from a simple medium of exchange into a tangible relic of global trade, empire, and loss. Restrepo-M66.32; S-B24; Cal-Type 242 (under Ph. V); KM-14.2; Fr-4a. 6.75 grams.
