Charles II gold Cob 2 Escudos, ND (ca. 1694–1713), Bogotá mint. KM-14.2, 6.77g. A classic 1715 Plate Fleet–style cob and a perfect visual match for many of the gold pieces recovered from that famous wreck. Struck at the remote Bogotá mint (Assayer “A” below the cross), this undated piece deliberately omits both date and mintmark, a characteristic that simultaneously frustrates and fascinates collectors of Spanish colonial “treasure” coinage. Beautifully struck for the crude cob series, with good centering on these hand-hammered, irregular flans. Although the legends are (as usual) completely off-flan, the devices that did reach the planchet are remarkably bold and sharp, and the reverse Jerusalem cross is framed by vivid die-polish lines that leap from the lustrous yellow-gold surfaces. Among the finest graded examples of this elusive type, and a standout representative of the romantic 1715 Fleet era.
