The Cerro Rico Hoard consists of nearly 1,400 Spanish colonial silver cob coins, almost entirely 8 reales ("pieces of eight") minted at the Potosí mint in Bolivia (Upper Peru) from silver mined at the legendary Cerro Rico ("Rich Mountain"). These hand-struck, irregular coins (~27g, 91.7% silver) date mostly to the early–mid 1750s (e.g., 1751–1754 under Ferdinand VI), with some earlier; assayers include "q", "C+q".Likely lost ~1752 during overland transport from Potosí, the hoard (a land find, not shipwreck) remained hidden for over 250 years until discovered in the early 2000s.Many survive in high grades (AU/MS), with bright surfaces after conservation; NGC certifies them as "Excavation Recovery" from the Cerro Rico Hoard. No other denominations or metals (e.g., gold) are associated—it's overwhelmingly these iconic Potosí 8 reales cobs, prized by collectors for their tie to colonial silver wealth and "pirate coin" lore.
