1792 Silver Center Cent J-1 NGC VG Details Rarity 14 Known Early US Struck in 1792 during the earliest days of the United States Mint, this historic pattern represents the first serious attempt to produce a federal cent. The innovative design utilized a copper planchet with a silver plug inserted at the center to bring the coin’s intrinsic value in line with its intended denomination. This short-lived experiment marks the very beginning of U.S. coinage and stands as a cornerstone of early American monetary history. Only approximately 14 examples are known to exist, placing this issue among the rarest and most coveted of all United States coins. The Silver Center Cent is universally recognized as a key trophy piece for advanced collectors of early U.S. patterns and foundational coinage.
