CAC. The 1776-dated (1783) Libertas Americana silver medal ranks among the most iconic medals tied to early American history. Just 23 examples in silver have been graded by PCGS, with only two at AU55 and twenty finer, underscoring its scarcity and importance within advanced collections. In CAC, there is 1 in AU55 with 4 finer.Widely admired for both symbolism and origin, the concept is credited to Benjamin Franklin, who envisioned a design celebrating the young nation’s triumph. As he described, “This puts me in mind of a medal I have had a mind to strike ... representing the United States by the figure of an infant Hercules in his cradle, strangling the two serpents; and France by that of Minerva, sitting by as his nurse, with her spear and helmet, and her robe specked by a few 'fleurs-de-lis.'”The execution of Franklin’s idea was entrusted to Augustin Dupré, one of France’s most accomplished medalists. His refined engraving brought classical imagery and political messaging together, creating a piece that endures as both a historical document and a masterpiece of medallic art.
