CAC. Struck in copper and preserved at the AU-53 level, this 1776 (1781) Libertas Americana medal offers a compelling connection to early American identity and French support during the Revolution. Conceived under the influence of Benjamin Franklin and executed in Paris, the design captures both allegory and political messaging in a format intended for circulation among American and European elites. The obverse presents Liberty with flowing hair, symbolizing independence, while the reverse depicts the infant Hercules overcoming adversaries with the aid of Minerva, a visual metaphor for the young United States aided by France. In copper, the medal takes on a more subdued, medallic character, with warm surfaces that emphasize its sculptural qualities and careful striking.Though more obtainable than its silver counterpart, the copper Libertas Americana remains rare in absolute terms, with just 83 examples certified by PCGS. There are 3 in AU53 with 76 finer. Its CAC endorsement—2 in AU53 with 10 finer—further underscores its originality and quality, making it a desirable representative of one of the most historically resonant medals associated with the American Revolution.
