Yi Hyong (Kojong) white-metal Specimen Pattern 1/2 Niang Year 495 (1886) UNC Details (Bent) PCGS, Incheon mint, KM-Pn13, Jacobs/Vermeule-AA106. Among the most difficult denominations within this highly sought-after Pattern series, created with the guidance of the Japanese in an effort to modernize Korean currency. While we see the 5 and 2 Niang with greater regularity, those of the single and 1/2 Niang elude even the most patient collectors, appearing at auction once every few years. While limited by seemingly trivial instances of environmental damage typical of these types, the piece faces up especially fine in-hand and is assuredly deserving of considerable attention.
