Yi Hyong (Kojong) white-metal Specimen Pattern Niang Year 495 (1886) SP64 PCGS, Incheon mint, KM-Pn14, Jacobs/Vermeule-AA105. An exciting rarity from this highly coveted Pattern series, recognized as an effort to modernize Korean currency and test recently imported machine minting technology. While examples of every denomination are elusive, based on a paucity of market appearances in the last two decades, the single Niang remains among the most difficult to locate, appearing at auction only two or three times in that span. The representative at hand is remarkably free of corrosion or environmental damage characteristic of these white-metal pieces, with an atypical brilliance and preservation, tying the Norman Jacobs example we handled in 2011, and only surpassed by a single specimen out of nine currently graded. As such, we anticipate a commensurate response consistent with these facts. HID07901242017 www.HA.com/TexasAuctioneerLicenseNotice
