Offered here in a large assortment of sizes that all bear the shape of the "Tò" (also spelled Taw or Toe), a mythical dragon-lion that symbolizes protection and strength. Aside from one damaged beak, the quality is sublime and does not exhibit the greenish patina that is often found on these sculptures. Burmese opium weights, or Chinthe weights, were used to measure commodities in Southeast Asia to ensure fair trade; while primarily intended for opium, they were also used for metals and spices. These weights were cast in bronze, lead, or brass, and are found in a number of different shapes that resemble figures from Burmese mythology. Originally, specific gauge marks on the weights could help identify where and when these pieces were cast, however this set appears to only feature decorative marks, indicating that they are later types. By the mid-20th Century, the use of opium weights declined as colonization increased and more modern scales were produced. HID07901242017 www.HA.com/TexasAuctioneerLicenseNotice
