1793 1C Chain, AMERICA, S-2, B-2, High R.4 -- Burnished -- NGC Details. XF. Breen Die State II, displaying bulges at the base of 793 and a lack of clash marks on the reverse. The 1793 Chain cent is the first circulating cent struck at the Philadelphia Mint and Sheldon-2 was the second Chain die variety produced. The obverse die is shared with Sheldon-1, but unlike S-1, AMERICA is spelled out on the Sheldon-2. Aside from the non-collectible NC-1, the S-2 is the rarest Chain cent variety.      The date and reverse peripheral legends are typically worn away on most S-2 examples. While the date on this piece shows partial wear, the Chain reverse shows strong details throughout. The chestnut-olive surfaces are burnished and show little of the natural surfaces prompting the Details designation by NGC. Despite the grade assignment, this Sheldon-2 offers XF-level sharpness on an historic and important issue. Listed among the 100 Greatest U.S. Coins (#21 in the 6th edition).
