1793 1C Chain, AMERICA, S-3, B-4, Low R.3, AMERICA VF35 PCGS. Breen Die State III. The production of the Chain cent was a rapid ordeal with the total 36,103-piece mintage produced towards the end of February and the beginning of March. The dies were used extensively, as seen by the heavy clashing in this late die state from the reverse chain below the bust. An earlier clashing produced the clash marks in front of Liberty's profile. Deep mahogany-brown luster envelops this coin with only a small reddish speck at the bottom right of the obverse and some light granularity above Liberty's hair disturbing it. The strike is relatively strong and the legends are easily legible with only a small abrasion that runs through the E in LIBERTY. There are some shallow minor marks within the fields but, they are not overly intrusive to the coin's appeal. Finer examples are seldom seen. Among the 100 Greatest U.S. Coins (#21 in 6th edition).
