1858 1C Small Letters PR64 PCGS. Snow-PR1. The 1858 Small Letters proof mintage is estimated at 120 pieces by Rick Snow, 200 coins by the Guide Book, and just 80 specimens by PCGS. Rick Snow observed just four die pairings for the issue and traced just five examples of the PR1 variety; the present piece would make the total six. The variety is identified by a somewhat lapped wreath and a broken S in STATES. This piece displays alluring visual distinction between the copper and nickel hues, as well as partially reflective fields. The strike is excellent with no weakness apparent and free from any visible marks. Even amongst all varieties, this example is among the upper echelon, with just 14 reported numerically finer by PCGS (5/26).
