1939-D 10C MS68+ FB PCGS CAC - The 1939-D Mercury Dime is widely recognized as one of the finest struck issues of the late-series Denver Mint emissions, and this MS68 FB+ example graded by PCGS and approved by CAC represents an extraordinary Superb Gem at the pinnacle of preservation and eye appeal. Both sides display exceptional originality and dramatic multicolored toning that immediately commands attention. Striking bands of vivid, untoned silver sweep across the central obverse, creating a striking visual contrast against surrounding waves of deep crimson-red toning that blend seamlessly into shades of violet, olive-green, and warm gold. This natural color progression continues across the reverse, where the fasces and olive branches are fully defined with outstanding sharpness, the Full Bands designation clearly evident with crisp separation across the horizontal bands. The reverse fields are equally vibrant, displaying rich crimson and orange-gold hues with flashes of emerald and violet that frame the devices and legends in dramatic fashion. Surface preservation is essentially flawless for the grade, with virtually no distracting marks and booming luster glowing beneath the toning. With only three CAC-approved examples graded finer, the quality within the grade and remarkable visual presentation are immediately apparent, placing this coin among the most impressive survivors of the issue. Comparable vividly toned pieces have realized between $4,500-$7,000, an inferior example for $4,613 03/26 GC the same example prior realized $5,250 06/24 GC. This example is about 30% nicer than the aforementioned coin with rainbow hues. A coin of this caliber would be equally at home in a world-class Mercury dime registry set or an elite toned type collection, where its breathtaking appearance and near-impeccable preservation would stand out even among the finest examples.
