Amsterdam, NY- Bank of Amsterdam Altered $5 Nov. 20, 1860 A5 PCGS Apparent Very Fine 20. The Bank of Amsterdam was organized in 1861 and remained in business until it was succeeded by the First National Bank of Amsterdam which was chartered on June 19, 1865. Although only in business for a short time, the bank attracted the interest of enterprising criminals who altered $5 notes from a completely fraudulent Indiana institution, the Pioneer Association of Lafayette, IN, so that they appeared to the unsuspecting to be issues of this New York bank. This alteration was quite well done and would have duped careless money handlers who did not research the genuine designs used by the Bank of Amsterdam. PCGS mentions rust stains and minor mounting remnants on the back. HID08101242017 www.HA.com/TexasAuctioneerLicenseNotice
