Amsterdam, NY- Village of Amsterdam (James Downs, Postmaster) 3¢ Feb. 1, 1816 Harris UNL PCGS Apparent Very Fine 25. Harris lists a similar design 3¢ note as an issue of the village, but your cataloger believes that this note, and others like it, was likely an issue of the village's Postmaster. James Downs, who signed this note, served as Postmaster from 1803-1817. This view is also supported by the fact that the note was payable in specie at the post office. The design is rather basic, with a small 3 denominational counter at top center and a small federal shield in the left end panel as well as THREE CENTS in the right end panel. PCGS mentions minor mounting remnants on the back that are not overly distracting. This is the only example that we are aware of at present, joining the Harris plate note and a 12-1/2¢ note as the only known examples from this issuer.
