(New York, NY?)- Jonathan McElvery(?) 50¢ May 1, 1838 Harris H692 PCGS Banknote Very Fine 30. Bad handwriting is often the nemesis of attributing obsolete paper money in general and private scrip in particular. That is the case here with your cataloger's and Harris's best guess that the issuer is perhaps "Jonathan McElvery." It is almost certain that this is not completely correct, but perhaps further research will clear this up. We are confident that the issuer was a merchant, as the note is payable at my store, but the note may not even be from New York City as there is no place of issue stated on the note. It is likely that the attribution of New York hangs its hat on the fact that the printer was located there. This note, nonetheless, serves as the Harris plate note in his 2001 New York Scrip catalog.
