Rhode Island May 22, 1777 $1/18 PMG Very Fine 25. The Act of May 22, 1777 authorized $15,000 in fractional dollar value notes that ranged between $1/36 and $1/3. These odd denominations actually translated to common denominations in the English monetary system at the time. For example, the $1/6 note was equal to 1s. Welcome Arnold signed this note that was part of an issue that was authorized in an attempt to remedy the lack of small change that was available. Of the half dozen $1/18 notes we have auctioned, this is the only one that is free of any problems. Seen with ample margins, bold printing, and good visual appeal.
