State of Georgia Payment Receipts November 10, 1792 Two Examples Very Fine. One is from the State of South Carolina and the other from the District of Georgia. Both of these pertain to the State of Georgia vs. Samuel Brailsford et al. These are receipts of a Mr. Joseph Watts, one for 10 Shillings and the other for 15 Shillings, for affixing seals of court and taking affidavits to prove service of subpoena writs. Each is signed by a clerk. This pertains to a very important early Supreme Court case during Chief Justice John Jay's tenure. Samuel Brailsford, Robert William Powell, John Hopton, were demanding monies from James Spalding. During the Revolutionary War, the state of Georgia passed a law that sequestered debts owed to British creditors, of whom Samuel Brailsford was one. Brailsford stated that James Spalding owed the debt to him, but the state of Georgia intervened saying that the debt was owed to the state per previous law. This case made it to the Supreme Court of the United States. This was the only jury trial in the storied history of the US Supreme Court. Chief Justice Jay ruled that the sequestration law did not transfer the debt owed to the state, and therefore the jury voted in favor of the defendants.
