Douglas, NE- Postal Note Type V 95¢ June 29, 1894 PMG Very Fine 30. Douglas, NE is located in Otoe County in the southeast corner of the state. It was platted in 1888 and boasted a population of 254 souls in the 1900 Federal census. The Douglas post office was designated as a Postal Note Office on January 7, 1889 and became a Money Order Office on July 7, 1890. Unlike many postal notes which bore a value of 1¢ and were purchased and retained as souvenirs, this example appears to have actually been used in commerce with a value of 95¢. Curiously, the note was apparently never redeemed as there is no paying office stamped on the back in the appropriate space. This Postal Note is a so-called Type V note, the last design issued; printed by Dunlap and Clarke between 1891 and 1894, when Postal Notes were discontinued. This is the first Postal Note reported from Douglas, NE. PMG mentions some spindle holes, tears, and a clipped upper left corner none of which have a meaningful impact on this very rare note's desirability.
