The 1884 gold dollar, despite a low mintage of just 5,230 business strikes, is relatively easy to locate in mint state as very few entered commercial channels and instead were saved by collectors. Due to the Bland-Pittman Act the mint was focused on Morgan Dollars, hence the low mintage of gold dollars. Specimens in the lofty grade of MS68, however, are a rarity! Silky smooth surfaces are bathed in vivid sunny-gold color with orange highlights on both sides. Satiny mint luster shines boldly with a partially prooflike effect complimenting the strong, full strike. Virtually pristine, the level of preservation is most impressive. It is hard to believe there are finer pieces out there but PCGS reports two MS68+ and an incredible MS69. This piece seems like an excellent value for the grade and mintage!
