1865 3CS MS68 PCGS. CAC. The mintage of three cent silver coins continued to decline in 1865 and reached a new low of 8,000 coins, yet has retained a decent high-grade survivorship. This, despite a majority of the three cent silver issues from 1863 to 1873 being melted following the Coinage Act of 1873, as most had been retained within government control. Nonetheless, examples as fine as MS68 are incredibly rare. Luminous lunar-white silver luster adorns this piece with some pleasant russet-red and electric-blue toning along the rims. The strike is exceptional with strong details along all elements and shows the typical heavy clashing on the obverse. This Superb Gem example is free from even the most minute marks that might obscure the distinct allure. The issue is rare finer with a lone example seen by PCGS, and CAC has only stickered five examples at MS68 as well as the lone example finer (7/26). Ex: Spring Showcase (Stack’s, 4/2025), lot 3018.
