Central American Republic Counterstamped 8 Reales ND (1840) AU55 NGC, KM120.3, Elizondo-Guat6 (Type II). Type III C/S (UNC Strong) on host: Peru. Republic 8 Reales 1836 LM-MT, Lima mint. Adorned with pale cornflower blue toning and great lustrous surfaces, this coin visually leaves little to desire. Additionally, the present offering is a true treat for collectors and experts of Central and South American counterstamps. For not only is the host coin scarce for the type, having been issued during the divisive civil war in Peru which fractured the nation into competing North and South factions, but the grade of the host coin and the counterstamp are quite exceptional for the type which rarely achieve an AU grade, much less a "UNC Strong" grade for the counterstamp.
