The gold dollar soon became the workhorse denomination during the California gold rush, and since those struck and the Philadelphia and southern branch mints had not made it out into the west coast for the most part, it fell upon jewlers like M. Deriberpie to create crude, reeded edge examples like this one. Since credibility was also important - one needed to be confident his or her gold dollar would trade for the stated sum - he also placed his initials on the reverse, "DERI" DERI
