An rare and desirbale proof specimen of New Zealand’s iconic 1935 “Waitangi” crown, struck to commemorate the 1840 Treaty of Waitangi between the British Crown and Maori chiefs. The reverse shows Maori chief Tamati Waka Nene and Lieutenant-Governor Captain William Hobson shaking hands beneath a crown, with “WAITANGI” in the exergue.  Soft silvery luster covers the devices and fields, enhanced by subtle egg-shell speckled toning. Only the faintest signs of handling are present, fully supporting the near-gem Proof-64 grade. We find the grade very conservative and consider the coin an absolute GEM.   With a total mintage of just 1,128 pieces (including approximately 468 proofs), this is one of New Zealand’s rarest and most celebrated coins—long regarded as a classic 20th-century crown and the key issue of the New Zealand series.
