(1831-34) Bechtler 30G. America's first gold dollar! Undated, but struck in 1831. The 1831 $1 gold by Christopher Bechtler of North Carolina represents one of the earliest privately minted gold coins struck in the United States. Bearing the distinctive legends “C. BECHTLER,” “N: CAROLINA,” and “RUTHERF:” along with the 30 G weight and star, this K-1 variety reflects Bechtler’s practical response to Southern gold discoveries and the region’s need for reliable coinage. Its reeded edge further underscores the maker’s concern with credibility and acceptance. Better images to be posted upon our return from the A.N.A. convention here in Pittsburgh.
