A Selection of Eight Advertising Notes and Ephemera Related to Patent Medicines from Arkansas, California (2), Illinois (2), Missouri, New York, and Ohio ca. 1874-1909. (Near) Hot Springs, AR- John Gillen $1 Advertising Note ND (20th century?) Fine-Very Fine. Gillen ran the New Victoria Hotel three miles east of Hot Springs around 1887 and offered his White Sulphur Springs Water as a remedy for a long list of maladies. Your cataloger wonders about the actual age of this piece due to the parchment-like paper used and the appearance of COPY above the Treasurer signature on the face in a modern font. This may be a 20th century incarnation. San Francisco, CA- L.C. Harmon, M.D. $10 Saving Bond and Health Questionnaire 1894 Fine; Good. "Doctor" Harmon conducted a rather extensive "mail order treatment" business which offered $20 courses of treatment for various ailments for $10. According to an 1891 newspaper article, local authorities discovered that the good doctor, in fact, did not have a medical license or diploma. Harmon was careful to accept only "patients" from outside of California. At the time California authorities felt that they could do nothing to terminate this business which was apparently still going strong three years later in 1894. The Saving Bond has edge tears, splits and a missing lower left corner tip while the accompanying health questionnaire has numerous fold splits. Chicago, IL- Dr. Rainey Medicine Co. $1; $2 Refund Certificates 1909; ND Fine. The company was in business ca. 1906-1910. James M. Rainey who signed these certificates used to issue refunds from dissatisfied customers, likely ended the company when he shot and killed his successor as head of the company in 1910 over a dispute over $5. St. Louis, MO- Dr. J.H. McLean's Tar Wine Lung Balm $1 Advertising Note ND (ca. 1885) Fine.
