CONSTANTIVS NOB CAES, laureate head of Constantius I right / GENIO POPV-LI ROMANI, Genius standing facing, polos on head left, nude save for chlamys across left shoulder, patera in outstretched right hand, cornucopia cradled in left arm; R in left field, G in exergue. RIC VI 67a. Splendid linework on a large flan. Constantius I, also known as Constantius Chlorus, had a brief but intriguing reign as Roman Emperor from AD 305 to 306. His rule was marked by both notable achievements and challenges. Constantius played a pivotal role in the Tetrarchy, a unique system of joint rule, managing the Western Roman Empire with a focus on economic stability, frontier defense, and the persecution of Christians. He showcased military prowess, portrayed here on this bronze issue, winning battles against the Allemanni and securing Roman control in Britannia. Nonetheless, challenges persisted, notably the usurpation of Britannia by Carausius, a rival emperor. Constantius's reign, captured in primary sources like Eumenius's panegyrics and contemporary inscriptions, lays the foundation for the later ascent of his son, Constantine the Great, and the transformative events that reshaped the Roman Empire.
