1842 $10 Large Date MS63+ PCGS. Exceptional eye appeal is an expected first impression for this beautiful 1842 eagle. The Large Date, No Motto variety displays lively semireflective fields and lustrous devices showcasing coruscating green-gold surfaces. The central motifs are well-struck and only a few stars on the lower obverse show softness. Small traces of crimson appear along Liberty's borders and the lustrous periphery flashes delicate apricot tones. Light marks in the fields are grade consistent and only a couple of minor ticks are seen on Liberty's chin and neck. A reverse die crack begins under the E in TEN that runs up through the eagle's talon, arching left through the wingtip to the rim above (as struck). The 1842 Large Date eagle is most often seen in grades ranging between VF and AU50 levels. Only 16 Mint State examples are reported at PCGS and NGC combined. All Mint State survivors are tightly held, as the last example we handled at this grade or finer was an MS64 NGC coin in our 2008 Long Beach Signature sale, and before that was a MS64 PCGS example in our 2001 FUN Signature. Today, this outstanding Plus-graded Select Uncirculated piece shows only four finer examples between the two major services. PCGS Population: 3 in 63 (1 in 63+), 2 finer (8/26).
