(1694) 1/2 P London Elephant Token, Diagonals, Betts-81, Hodder 1-A, W-12000, High R.6, AU50 PCGS. While little is known about the Elephant tokens, they were likely produced at the Tower Mint in London. Those with the London inscription, GOD PRESERVE LONDON, are dated to 1694 based on the date of others with the American inscriptions. The undated pieces such as this one are common, while others referring to the Carolinas are scarce. A single variety is known with a New England inscription and is extremely rare. The Whitman Encyclopedia of Colonial and Early American Coins rates this variety "URS-3" suggesting a total population of three or four coins, the same as the New England pieces. While we disagree with that rating, the Diagonals variety is clearly rarer than the usual plain shield variety. This medium brown example has a few moderate rim dings and a solitary thin horizontal mark above the pachyderm. Listed on page 16 of the 2026 Guide Book.
