1836 $2 1/2 Script 8, HM-4, R.1, MS61 PCGS. On later die states, the HM-4 variety shows three lengthy obverse die cracks that intersect on Liberty's portrait above the ear. This is a much earlier die state, with only a single short die crack from star 6 to L of LIBERTY and into the hair below. LIBERTY is repunched. There is no berry on the reverse and the eagle has no tongue. The date employs a Script 8. This is a smoothy lustrous MS61 example with subtle, widely separated hairlines in the fields, but no marks or abrasions of consequence. The strike is comprehensively sharp throughout both sides.
