1835 $5 HM-8, High R.3, AU58 NGC. Ex: S.S. New York. The die pair is among the more plentiful ones for the 1835 Classic half eagle, although the appeal of this coin is perhaps most associated with its shipwreck pedigree. The S.S. New York was an early shipwreck in U.S. numismatic history, preceding the famous S.S. Central America, Brother Jonathan, and Republic sinkings. The New York sank in the Gulf in 1846, thus coins from its discovery and salvage are of the older vintage of numismatics. Enter this Classic Head half eagle: the coin displays bright yellow-gold luster and has minimal significant abrasions, with the barest trace of high-point wear. When tilted beneath a light, the fields reveal hints of reflectivity. Includes a brown leatherette "Gentlemen of Fortune" presentation case. HID06601242017 www.HA.com/TexasAuctioneerLicenseNotice
